Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

Goldenseal has been used for centuries in traditional cultures, such as the Cherokee Native American, to treat infections of the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. It restores mucus membranes and the skin by means of its powerful pharmacology including potent natural alkaloids and berberine. Goldenseal is my go-to antimicrobial herb to address skin infections and to tonify skin recovering from procedures or injuries.  Its vibrant golden yellow color is surprisingly bright and has been used as a natural coloring pigment. It is one of our more bitter herbs, not quite as strong as gentian, however making it extremely astringent and perfect for healing the skin from a variety of conditions. Sustainable cultivating is essential as goldenseal has been an endangered plant. Alternatives include Oregon Grape Root and Chinese Coptis.
